End of Week 8
Published on Apr 5, 2019 18:11

Hi everyone,

I might as well start with the obvious . . . yesterday around 200 of our students participated in a walk out as a protest against the changes to secondary school staffing announced by the government. I know many parents supported their teens and gave them permission to participate -- which is perfectly acceptable -- but it is still our responsibility to track their attendance and report to you when your teen misses school. I know many of you are concerned for what these changes could mean for HT, and there are lots of rumours about cuts to courses, programs and departments. So far, however, nothing has been decided as our Board is still awaiting details from the government on how we are supposed to make these changes work. Once we get more information I will be sure to update everyone.

Next Tuesday is our annual Pierre Destine Soccer Tournament, our day for students of all abilities to get together and enjoy a day of fun and competition. Thanks to Mr. DeOliveira for his organizational work.

Our art classes will experience an outstanding silk screen workshop on Friday. Mrs. Clancy is bringing in a professional silk screen artist to teach our students this fine art -- and who knows? It could even become a way for interested students to earn some money!

Grade 10 Civics students will have their final exam on April 16th, which is also the last day of Term 1. On April 17 they will start their Careers course, and the school begins Term 2 which means our period order changes from 1,2,3,4 to 2,1,4,3. Senior students with a period 1 spare will have to start getting up early to be here for period 1 once Term 2 starts.

With the return of warm weather in spring just around the corner, it's a good time to review the dress code. Students are expected to be in uniform each day unless it is a theme day or civvies day. Even on those days, there are appropriate dress expectations for all students. Some reminders:

- all tops should have proper sleeves, a neckline around the collarbones, and waist-length hemline. Golf shirts, rugby shirts and t-shirts are the appropriate summer wear.
- sandals need to have a decent bottom tread and heel strap. This is for safety. We had a student fall on the stairs and break an arm last year because of flip flops. Please make sure your teen is in proper footwear to avoid accidents.
- shorts and capris are part of the uniform so rolling up pants is unnecessary

Our students are generally very good about observing the dress code, whether on uniform or non-uniform days. We appreciate your assistance in reinforcing it at home!

Speaking of uniform, we are happy to announce a new item in the line-up. Our uniform vendor is now providing a rugby sweater made by Barbarian, a top-tier manufacturer of sports wear. This new top is monochrome replacing the yellow, black and white rugby shirt. Students will be able to purchase the new top in September, and of course the old one will also be acceptable.

Don't forget that the Easter Holiday is coming in two weeks. Friday April 19 and Monday April 22 are holidays (Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively). As well, we have a PA Day on May 3rd.

This weekend promises to bring us some warmth and sunshine so be sure to get out and get your vitamin D!

God bless
