End of Week 1
Published on Feb 8, 2019 18:13

Hi everyone

We are now underway in semester 2 and the students are settling in nicely in their new classes. We completed grade level assemblies and reviewed important school rules and procedures. Please note a necessary tweak to our cell phone/electronic devices policy:

  • During class all electronic devices capable of receiving information, including phones, smart watches and wireless ear buds, must be powered off/put away unless the teacher permits use for classroom purposes.

We also had to review the definition and consequences of plagiarism with all students as we have experienced a recent increase in the number of cases of students copying work from one another and/or from the Internet. Teachers continue to develop strategies to prevent plagiarism.

Next week we will be distributing Semester 1 Final Report Cards. Please be sure to ask your teen for it so that it doesn't become grey mush in the bottom of the backpack. If you have questions about the reports, please contact the teacher(s) directly. Don't forget to return the sign-off page.

As I mentioned previously we have taken delivery of two portables for use in the 2019-2020 school year. Once they are in operation the back parking lot will become a pedestrian area, so we will need to discontinue using the back lot for drop-off/pick-up. Student safety comes first!

We are anticipating growth again next year so that means a more crowded school and a more crowded cafeteria at lunch. For this reason, we will be moving to a 2 lunch-period day in September. You can tell your teens from me that this does not mean that they will have 2 lunch periods. We will have half the school at lunch in each lunch period. Stay tuned for further details about how this will work.

Don't forget that Monday February 18th is Family Day Holiday. This is a great day for students to get out and complete some Community Service (aka volunteer) hours. Reminder to grade 12 parents that all hours must be complete and submitted by April 1st for your teen's photo to appear on the graduation composite photograph. If all records are not submitted by June 1st we will be unable to order a diploma from the Ministry of Education and your teen will not be able to participate in graduation. We have reminded the students about this, and we will send an email reminder to those whose hours are not yet in.

The Grade 10 Literacy Test will take place on March 27 in the a.m. We will have a modified bus and school day schedule that day. Only students who have to write the test will come in the morning, and then the rest of the students will have a second bus run exactly 3.5 hours later. The afternoon bus runs will be at their normal times. We will be sending home more information about this in a letter in the next week or so.

All the best for the weekend,

God bless
