Exam Week
Published on Jan 25, 2019 18:04

Hi everyone

So we had a ragged end to the semester with two inclement weather days leading into exams. We recognize that this may have added some stress to your teens as they prepared for their finals. But the first two days of exams have gone smoothly. Be sure your teens are preparing for their next exams this weekend. Reminder that if we have an inclement weather day on Monday we will push those exams to Tuesday and Tuesday's exams to Wednesday. If both days are inclement weather days (God forbid) we will have both exams on Wednesday. Please join me in  a prayer for milder weather.

A couple of events coming up for your interest.

  • Gently-used uniform sale on Wednesday January 30 in the cafeteria from 12-4 pm. We have many items donated back to the school from students who have outgrown them or graduated. They are in good condition, clean, and (most importantly) inexpensive! All items are $5 (tops) and $10 (pants). This is a great way to top up on items for your rapidly growing or soon to graduate teens.
  • In co-operation with the public board, SMCDSB will be hosting an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship (OYAP) parent information night on Thurs Feb 21 at the Holiday Inn, Barrie from 7-8:30 pm. If your teen is thinking of a career in the skilled trades, or taking co-op next semester in the skilled trades, please consider attending. Great information about opportunities in the skilled trades and the OYAP program will be available.
  • We will be holding another Parent Information Night on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 pm in the library for grade 9 students interested in the Tobermory Trip taking place in May. Semester 2 Geography students and their parents are especially invited to attend.
  • The SMCDSB Continuing and Community Education Department is holding a parent information evening for its Summer Travel Credits Program on Thursday, February 7 at 6pm at St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Barrie. This summer's offerings include English Writer's Craft (EWC4U/C) in Ireland and London, English (ENG3U) in Ireland and London, and Holocaust Studies (CHT3O) in Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow and Prague! These are incredible opportunities. RSVP at http://eftours.ca/creditinfo

Reminder please to have your teens bring in their textbooks from their Semester 1 courses. As I'm sure you're aware, textbooks are very expensive nowadays, and while 95% of texts are returned on time and in good condition, the ones that are lost/damaged can cost thousands of dollars to replace. Lost/damaged books are the student's responsibility so that means we have to pass the cost back to them. We will not be able to issue new books for semester 2 until all outstanding books are recovered. Thanks for your assistance and cooperation.

I've been notified that we will be receiving a new portable classroom in the coming days. It will be located at southwest corner of the property alongside the soccer field and will be ready for use in September. This may result in changes to pick-up/drop-off access in the back parking lot in September as we cannot have moving vehicles in an area where students are walking to and from class. Stand by for more information!

From what I hear, this promises to be a wild weather weekend so be safe on the roads and have a great weekend.

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
