End of Week 13
Published on Nov 30, 2018 19:16

Hi everyone

This weekend marks the beginning of Advent and the Christmas Season in the Catholic Calendar. The nights are long and dark, but the Advent Candles symbolize the hope of the coming of our Saviour. We have our school Advent Mass taking place on Wednesday December 5 at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church. As always we ask that you do not allow your teen to stay home or otherwise miss this important school mass. We are blessed to enjoy the right to celebrate the Eucharist as a school community.

Christmas Activity Day is approaching on December 21st and already some of the activities have sold out. In most cases, this is due to the capacity of the venue and/or the bus capacity, both of which are beyond the control of the school. If your teen is unable to get his or her first choice because it has sold out, we cannot add squeeze any more in unless someone else drops out. Thank you for your understanding. A reminder to check School-Day for events and capacity.

I have heard from some parents with concerns about edible cannabis products. We share your concerns and hope you will speak with your teens about the importance of exercising caution when accepting food items from others. Edible cannabis products can take any of the following forms:

  • cakes
  • cookies
  • brownies
  • gummies
  • hard candies
  • jujubes
  • chocolates
  • fudge
  • tea
As the police have told me, if you can imagine it, there's probably an edible cannabis product for it. Some suggestions to ensure your teen is safe include:
  • only accept food items in original store wrappers
  • avoid eating unwrapped candy at parties
  • know the source of drinks and food
  • avoid homemade candies, cookies, snacks, etc. unless they know it's safe
Some signs of marijuana/cannabis use to watch out for:

Physical Change
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Fast heart rate
  • Sleepy, lethargic
  • Lack of coordination
  • Increase cravings for snacks
Change in Actions
  • Confusion and lack of focus
  • Unusually talkative
  • Dropping studies or usual activities
  • Misjudging time
  • Secretiveness

Paraphernalia

  • Pipes
  • Shredded leafy debris
  • Cigarette rolling papers
  • Very small bottles of oil
  • Small metal clips
  • Eyedroppers
  • Visine

If you are concerned about your teen's use of marijuana, please call the school Guidance department and we can help you get in touch with community resources who can assist you. If you think your teen is experiencing addiction symptoms, there are supports as well. We will continue to bring community partners in to assist with teaching students about positive, healthy choices and the damaging effects of marijuana use.

Don't forget about our grade 8 parent information night taking place Thursday December 6th for those of you with students entering grade 9 in the fall. We will have an open-house night for you to meet teachers, and reacquaint yourselves with the transition process. We look forward to seeing you there!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

God bless

Brian McKenzie,
Principal
