End of Week 11
Published on Nov 17, 2018 16:48

Hi everyone

Sorry this is a bit late. We've had a busy week!

Congratulations to our Jr. Girls' Basketball team on reaching the GBSSA Finals after a perfect 9-0 run in the regular season and playoffs. Though they lost to Huntsville in the finals, they enjoyed an outstanding season that included a tournament championship. Thanks again to coaches D. Viveiros and Grogan!

Tonight our school marching band is taking part in the annual Bradford Santa Claus Parade. I hope you will get out to see them. We have the only marching band in the entire Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board so this is a special night for our players. Please come out to support Ms. Fraser and all the musicians who have been working so hard to prepare for this event all semester.

We have playoffs underway for our winter sports, so encourage your teen to come out for a team. As well we have planning underway for our annual Christmas Activity Day. Weather permitting, it will take place December 21. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of activities, including visiting sites in Toronto, skiing, movies, and many others. Please be sure your School-Day notifications are on!

Coming up this week we are recognizing our Honour Roll Students on Tuesday. The Honour Roll is for students who achieved a cumulative 80% average or better last year. In the afternoon we will also hold our first Spirit Assembly to recognize our fall sports teams and coaches. We are proud of all our students accomplishments, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or in the community.

Parents have contacted the school looking for information about marijuana now that it is legal. I recommend you visit https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-medication/cannabis.html for good information about the health issues related to marijuana use. A reminder that it is still illegal for anyone under the age of 19 to possess, purchase or use marijuana, and no one should ever bring marijuana to school. Remember -- it is illegal for any person to use marijuana within 10 meters of school property.

We have also received reports of students using vaporizers at school (also known as vaping). This, too, is illegal under the Smoke Free Ontario Act and can result in fines and suspension from school. Please talk to your teens about both these issues, and if you ever need information or advice, give us a call.

We are hosting an elementary girls volleyball tournament on Wednesday. This means lots of extra visitors and young people in the school, so please be sure to exercise caution in the parking lot, especially now that it gets dark so early.

And a reminder that mid-term report cards will be sent home this week. I will send out a notification on the day we release them to the students so you know they are coming home. If you have questions or concerns about your teen's progress, please contact the classroom teacher as they are in the best position to assist. We may also contact you directly if we are concerned with your teen's progress and discuss whether a team meeting (teachers, guidance, student success) with you is necessary.

Try to stay warm, and have a lovely weekend.

God bless

Brian McKenzie
