End of Week 2
Published on Sep 14, 2018 18:04

Hi everyone

Don't know about you but this week went by in a big hurry. We had Picture Day on Tuesday (retakes will be October 22nd) and it was great to see the big smiles and happy faces of our teens. Classes are running on all eight cylinders now and you should see homework, assignments and even a few test scores coming home. Reminder that if you have questions about your teen's classes to contact the teachers directly since they are in the best position to answer questions and address concerns.

Reminder of our first Parent Council Meeting on Monday at 5:30 in the library. I sent out a nomination form if you are interested in running for one of the elected positions. All parents are welcome to attend the meetings which will take place on Mondays throughout the year. The schedule will be determined at this first meeting.

Reminder to senior students who drive a car to school to register their vehicles for parking passes. I understand the link in the initial e-mail I sent out didn't work for everyone. I have sent it again directly to the students at the school emails. There are a number of replies from non-board email addresses as well so please give it another try.

Next Friday, the 21st, will be our first Civvies Day of the year. If you are new to the school or aren't sure what this means, Civvies Days are usually the last teaching Friday of the month. Students are permitted to buy out of uniform for $2 (which goes to charity) and dress casually within the bounds of the dress code -- please consult the code of conduct for details. Those who do not wish to buy out must be in uniform.

Next week is pretty quiet, but coming up we have Grade Level Religion Retreats starting with the Grade 9's on September 26th. The students will go to Holy Martyrs of Japan Church for their retreat activities. Cost is $5 which covers bus and lunch.

Starting today and continuing every other Friday, DGN Kilters will have their mobile sales van in the parking lot from 11-4. It's kind of like a food truck full of clothes -- students or parents can make purchases of uniform items right from the truck. We hope this proves a more convenient and easy way to buy items throughout the school year.

Friday September 28th is our first PA Day of the year. Teachers and EA's will be engaged in workshops and training related to Health and Safety, including such topics as Ryan's Law (related to students with asthma), Sabrina's Law (for students with life-threatening allergies), Safe Schools, Student Medical Plans and a host of other topics. This means no school for our students, so it's a great day for them to work on accumulating Community Service Hours. If your teen needs suggestions, Mr. MacGregor, our Chaplain, has plenty.

Our sports teams will be starting games and tournaments soon. Remember, if you plan on taking your teen home from a game, you must send in a note on the morning of the game to get signed by me or the coach won't be permitted to let your teen go with you. This is for the students' safety, and it is beyond the authority of the coach to make an exception. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated.

On the horizon is the Thanksgiving Holiday (October 8th), our first school mass (October 11) and Grade 9 Tiger Fun Day at the Ontario Education Leadership Camp in Orillia (October 9). Lots happening so please watch for this weekly news bomb. Many thanks for the compliments and positive feedback -- glad to know my weekly ramblings are useful and appreciated!

Enjoy the weekend. Fall is lurking just around the corner.

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
