End of Week 13
Published on May 11, 2018 18:08

Hi everyone

Thanks to all the parents and families who attended our Honour Roll Breakfast in celebration of our students' academic achievements from first semester. There was a wonderful turnout and the gym was filled with proud parents and students. Special shout out to our Hospitality students and teachers for the work they did preparing all the food!

We also celebrated mass together after our Walk for Social Justice/Pilgrimage to Holy Martyrs of Japan Church. Fr. Joshua led an excellent Eucharistic Celebration and delivered a moving homily about the importance of education and inspiration. Thank you for making sure your teen did not miss school or try to sign out to avoid attending the mass.

As this was Catholic Education Week, each day had a different theme. Today's theme is Celebrating Parents, Community and Volunteers. Here is a special message from Mr. Brian Beal, our Director of Education:

This year’s theme for Catholic Education week is Renewing the Promise.  We will be joining with every other Catholic school in every Catholic School Board in Ontario to remember our own individual and collective commitments to Catholic education.

Catholic Education Week is a wonderful opportunity to recognize how fortunate we are to share in the gift of Catholic education. It is also the perfect time to recognize everyone in our school communities who work together to share in the faith and learning journey of our students and staff. So many of our accomplishments are only possible because of the tireless support and dedication of our broader school community -- those who assist us in so many ways -- from the Board of Trustees who provide governance and leadership, to the members of our SEAC and CPIC who provide sage advice, to our Catholic School Community Councils who dedicate so much of themselves to our school communities, to our bus drivers who keep our precious cargo safe each and every day, to our Volunteers who help out in so many ways each and every day.

A school and a school board can only thrive with the support of its larger community -- and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for what you do to make Catholic education in Simcoe Muskoka the very best it can be. God bless each of you for the work you do each and every day. It is such an honour to work with you.

We have had a very busy spring with sports, trips and school activities, but in the coming weeks we will start to wind down as we prepare for final exams and course culminating task activities. Again, attendance is an important factor in student success so please be sure your teen is getting to school on time each day.

A reminder that each day we send home both e-mails and phone calls about attendance. Our phone call logs show that a large number of calls each day are either unanswered or disconnected (i.e. hang ups before the full message is delivered). This could mean your teen is intercepting calls before you are aware of them. If you would like to change your contact number from a home phone to your personal mobile phone please call Mrs. Belanger at extension 180 or send a quick e-mail to [email protected] and let her know. A reminder also that you can use your phone to explain your teen's absence. Be sure to listen to the entire message for reply options at the end.

Please donate your gently used clothing items to our Spring Clothing Drive on behalf of the Kidney Foundation. For two weeks starting Monday May 14th we will be accepting any items for our goal of 2000 lbs of clothing, which includes belts and accessories, jewelry, bags and purses, and bedding and linens. It's a great way to clean out the closets and help others!

We will also once again this year have an e-waste event. Bring your used electronics, including tv's, computers, monitors, printers, microwave ovens -- anything that relies on electronic components -- to the bin we will have set up in the front parking lot from May 29th to June 19th. If you or your neighbours, friends, or relatives have items to drop off we will have the bin open during school hours (8-4:30) daily. Contact Mr. Mainolfi here at the school if you wish to arrange an alternate time for drop off, i.e. weekends or after hours.

Grade 9 Math students will write the EQAO Assessment on Thursday June 14th and Friday June 15th. This provincial assessment, while not a graduation requirement, serves as the final exam for the grade 9 students so it is imperative that all grade 9's taking Math this semester be present to write it. Since it is set by the province there is no opportunity to write it at a later date.

May 21st is the Victoria Day Holiday so students have the day off to help around the house and/or earn their volunteer hours. Please note that this is the last day off before the end of the school year.

Next year's school calendar has been approved by the Board and the Ministry of Education. You can access them here for your planning purposes. You will get a paper copy in September.

Finally, our enrollment continues to climb as we have again welcomed new students for September. If you have friends, relatives or neighbours with teens who are new to Bradford (or who will be moving here soon) please have them contact us as soon as possible for a registration package so that we can plan for September. We will be opening in September with over 740 students, which is a tremendous 12% growth over this year.

Finally please note that the final evaluation period starts June 15th. Students may have in-class activities leading up to final exams on June 22. Please do not schedule appointments or days away from school during these days as teachers are working hard to get all their final assessments completed. We want to make sure all students have every opportunity for success.

I wish every mother a Happy Mother's Day.

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
