End of Week 1

Hi everyone,

Semester 2 is off to a great start with our students happily working away in their new classes. We continue to see enrollment growth and are continuously welcoming new families to the school. It's a very exciting time for the school.

Today we had grade level assemblies to remind students about school rules and procedures, including:

  • uniform policy: students must be in uniform to be in class. We have plenty of clean items available in the school for students to borrow so there is no excuse for being out of uniform
  • cell phone use: students are only permitted to use their phones in class with the permission of the teacher. Students using their phones inappropriately may be sent to the office and/or have their phones held by the vice-principal for the remainder of the day. If this happens more than once, we may require a parent to come in to collect the phone from the office.
  • attendance: students are expected to be in class on time every day. If you know your teen will be away please call the school and let us know. Upon return, please send in a note. This will reduce the number of calls and e-mails you receive about attendance.
  • outstanding/lost books: students must return their textbooks before being issued new ones. Books lost or damaged must be replaced by the student, so prompt payment is greatly appreciated. Please contact Mrs. Belanger at your earliest convenience.
Our grade 12 students heard a few additional messages of importance:
  • Community Service/Volunteer Hours: students must complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. This is a provincial requirement equal to their 30 credits and Literacy Test completion. Students without 40 hours submitted by June 15th will not receive a diploma, nor will they participate in the graduation ceremony on June 28th. Students whose hours are not submitted by March 29th won't be included on the graduation composite photo. Students can see Mr. MacGregor for volunteer opportunities.
  • Graduation fees: Grad. fees are $25. This covers the cost of graduation caps/gowns for the grads, as well as decorations, chair rentals and refreshments. Payment is through School-Day. We appreciate your prompt payment.
We have a couple of events on the calendar for your attention:
  • Monday, February 12th at 6 pm is our next Catholic School Community Council (aka parent council) meeting. Please RSVP using this form.
  • Wednesday February 14th is Ash Wednesday. The school will participate in a liturgy and receive ashes during period 3. Please do not schedule appointments or excuse your teen from school that afternoon.
  • Friday February 16th is the rescheduled Winter Activity Day. Students have signed up for a variety of activities in and out of the school. Buses will run as usual, so unless other arrangements have been made you can expect your teen home at the regular time.
  • Semester 1 Final Report Cards will be sent home Thursday February 15th. Please ask your teen for it and review it carefully. Parents in separate homes will receive their own copy via mail.

Planning for our Tanzania Mission Trip continues, and I am pleased to announce that we are also offering a History excursion to Europe to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Mr. Strycharz, the staff lead, will be hold a meeting for all students interested in taking part in this credit course opportunity on Tuesday February 13th at lunch, and we are planning a parent meeting as well. Stay tuned for more information.

Thank you as always for the confidence and faith you have shown us, and for supporting Catholic Education in Bradford!

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
Principal
