End of Week 13
Published on Dec 1, 2017 18:08

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the Holy Season of Advent (which technically begins Sunday), when we prepare for the celebration of the coming of our Saviour. Radio stations are playing Christmas music, stores have their decorations up, and the annual message of spend, spend, spend seems to be all around us. But Christmas doesn't have to be a frenzy of shopping, spending, eating and drinking. As a Catholic Community we must also take time for prayer and reflection as we think of the great gift of salvation that Christ brought us through his birth. Christmas celebrations are a reflection of the joy and happiness of God's gift to us.

This past week many of our students participated in a food drive in support of the Bradford Food Bank in conjunction with Bradford District High School and South Simcoe Police. This culminated with the Copper Cup, the first ever student-police hockey game in Bradford. It was truly a wonderful celebration of the season as our families opened their hearts (and cupboards) and donated over 700 food items. 300 students attended the hockey game and showed great school spirit as they cheered on the student team made up of HT and BDHS students. South Simcoe Police plan to make this an annual community event so we look forward to supporting this event for many years to come. A reminder that when we have these kinds of events, students must remain with their classes and attend the event. Supervision requirements make it impossible for us to allow students to remain behind at school.

A reminder that Thursday, Dec. 7th is Grade 8 Parent Information Evening. Parents of any student currently in grade 8 at any school in Bradford (public or Catholic) are invited to attend and learn more about our programs for students. There will be information sessions, classroom demonstrations, and Q & A time for parents. We look forward to meeting all parents. Be sure to invite anyone you know who has a child in grade 8!

Christmas Activity Day will take place on Friday December 22nd. This exciting tradition allows students to take part in a variety of fun activities, including skiing, the new Star Wars movie, and even an escape room experience! There no-cost activities as well, but all students must sign up for their preferred activity using School Day. If you have not yet registered to use School Day, please ask your teen to bring home the registration form with your unique access key. Remember -- you do not have to use the on-line pay features. However, permission forms and event notifications are sent out through School Day. Don't miss out! Sign up today!

We are also very excited (and a little nervous!) about our upcoming presentation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on December 14/15 at 6:30 pm. Don't miss this exciting, fun and dazzling play about the dreamer who saves Egypt! This is a show for everyone. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and are available through the school!

As I mentioned last week, our school Advent Mass is taking place December 19th at Holy Martyrs of Japan Church. We are asking for your support in ensuring students are in attendance that day by not allowing them to sign out or come in late to avoid mass. We are blessed to have the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist as a school community, but it is a right we must protect.

We hope the Christmas season brings you joy, peace, and the love of family and friends, and rest assured we will do our best to remind the students of the true meaning of Christmas. Then before we know it, we'll be into January and the rush of exams and the beginning of second semester!

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
