End of Week 7
Published on Oct 19, 2018 18:20

Hi everyone,

Looks like winter is trying to assert itself early this year. I hope the early snow isn't an indicator of what's to come!

Thanks to all the parents who came out to Parent-Teacher Interviews last night. It was wonderful to see so many parents in the school meeting and talking with teachers. And most of you were smiling, so that's a positive sign too! Reminder that Mid-Term Report Cards will be coming out in another 3 weeks, so be sure to ask your teen to give it to you. We will send out notifications ahead of time so you'll know when they are given out. Mid-term also marks the point when we switch period order. As of November 7, we change period order from 1,2,3,4 to 2,1,4,3. This is done to accommodate teams, trips, school events and activities so they don't always affect the same classes. This will be new to our grade 9's so we'll be sure to give them plenty of warning.

This weekly message goes out to over 1000 e-mail addresses. If you no longer have teens in the school you can opt out of receiving these messages by tapping the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message. I apologize if you are receiving these messages in error.

This week our Jr. Boys' Soccer team won the CSASC (Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County) Championship. Next stop: GBSSA! Congratulations, boys.

Reminder that next Friday, October 26th, is our second PA Day of the semester. Teachers are offsite that day participating in Curriculum Development Workshops so the school is closed.

The last teaching Friday of each month is Civvies Day. Students have been reminded that Civvies Days are optional and they may participate via Buy-In for a minimum $2 donation. The money collected goes to various charities supported by the school, including Share-Life, the Bradford Food Bank, WE, and many others. Students who do not wish to participate must be in regular uniform. We will also have Theme Days throughout the year that are at no cost to students.

Our Thanksgiving Food Drive is still underway, and we are asking that you give whatever you can to help. Homelessness and poverty affect many in Bradford and our goal is to provide as much support as we can. Join the families who have already contributed and help us fill the shelves at the Food Bank. Every contribution helps.

For our Grade 9 Parents a reminder of Take Our Kids To Work Day on November 14th. This is a great opportunity for grade 9 students to get some insight into the world of work as they start their first steps on the road to adulthood and choosing careers. That same day is our Grade 8 Orientation Day, where we have our future grade 9's in the school to learn about high school. They will visit classrooms, watch demonstrations, participate in activities, and enjoy their first high school lunch in the cafeteria.

The laws around buying, using and possessing recreational cannabis have changed in the province of Ontario. This change in legislation does not have an impact on how we deal with possession, use and distribution of cannabis, alcohol or illegal drugs in our schools. Parents need to know that it remains illegal for anyone under the age of 19 to use or possess recreational cannabis. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario. Regardless of age, cannabis is not allowed on school property or at school-related events at any time. As has always been the case, there will be consequences for students if they are believed to be in possession or under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or cannabis. This could include suspensions. Anyone found to be providing (distributing) cannabis to a person on school property will face disciplinary action, which could include expulsion from school and police involvement.

We encourage families to be informed about the facts of cannabis legalization and the potential health risks for young people. The following resources will provide some useful information.

Cannabis Information for Educators

We are planning a series of workshops for students in conjunction with MADD Canada about the dangers of driving while under the influence of marijuana. Please be safe.

Monday October 22nd is Picture Re-take Day. If you need your teen's picture redone, or if they were away from school on picture day, Monday is the day! Even if you do not want to purchase a package, we need photos for Student ID cards and our Student Information System.

Finally (whew!) the Semi-Formal Dinner Dance is taking place Friday November 9th at Cardinal Golf and Country Club from 6-11 pm. Tickets are available through School-Day but are in limited numbers.

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend. Stay safe!

God Bless

Brian McKenzie,
Principal
