End of Week 3
Published on Sep 23, 2018 10:39

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the late delivery of this week's newsletter. I got bogged down in a couple of more urgent matters and couldn't get it out on time.

Many thanks to the parents who attended our first CSCC (Parent Council) meeting. I am pleased to announce the following positions on council:

Co-Chairs: Rob Ben and Benedita Wilkerson
Secretaries: Nadia Lukatschuk and Joanne Gallo
Staff representatives: Jessica Gorr and Catherine Grassi
Student representative: Kassidy W.

We will be attending the Board Commissioning Service in October, then proceeding with regular business. One of our key items is a Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grant we received for providing information and a presentation on the effect of screen time on teenagers. We plan to hold an evening event in May during Catholic Education Week. Keep an eye out for updates.

Student Advisory Council

I am convening a group of students to act as an advisory council on school issues. We have a number of student groups that work on behalf of the school (Athletic Council, Social Justice, Green Team, Bridge Builders) so my plan is to bring representatives of each of these groups along with our Student Senate members (Kassidy W., Claire T., and Benjamin P.) to meet with me a few times each year. This is a great way for students to bring their concerns, suggestions and ideas forward. I'll post updates after our meetings.

Simcoe Community Services Event

Simcoe Community Services presents a full day conference on: Understanding and Intervening Effectively with Challenging Children at Home and in Schools. Please see the flyer linked below and register directly with SCS at the registration link.

Reminder that next Friday is our first PA Day of the year. It's a great day for students to get caught up on school work, volunteer hours, or work around the house. Staff will be participating in workshops on Health and Safety, Safe Schools, and Emergency Preparedness. Monday October 8th is the Thanksgiving Holiday and then we have another PA Day on October 26th.

Thanks to all the parents and students who registered their vehicles for parking passes. We distributed passes this week with assigned spots. Please consult the attached map and note that the spots numbered on the map are reserved for students. We will be painting the numbers on the lot as soon as possible. When you visit the school please avoid parking in the reserved spots. We appreciate your cooperation.

Parking Lot Map

Please note, too, that the spots are assigned for safety reasons. It would be a big help if you reinforce with your teens at home the importance of using their assigned spots. There were also a few students who requested parking spot changes due to size of their vehicles. Students who need to change their spots for legitimate reasons can fill out a Parking Reassignment Form in the main office rather than dropping in to see me. This will allow us to track changes and update our database properly.

This week our soccer teams will be participating in the Hustle for a Cure fundraiser at the Springwater Fields in Barrie. This annual tournament raises money for a number of charities that work to find cures for various diseases and illnesses. Thanks to Mr. DeOliveira for his work in coordinating this important event. We also have Basketball, Volleyball, Cross-Country and Grade 9 Religion Retreats this week, so things are kicking into high gear. We hope you have the chance to see your teens play in their games. Remember that part of the fun of playing on a school team is riding the bus to and from away games with their team, so please don't be too quick to drive your teen home after an away game.

And I know it's early days but we are already planning our Early Communication Letters. These are sent out after the first 6 weeks of the semester. To cut down on paper and to make sure you get the letters, we will be sending them to you via e-mail. Watch for them during the second week of October. Parent-Teacher Interviews will take place Thursday October 18th from 5:30-7:00pm by appointment. You can sign up for an appointment through School Day. Please make sure you have Notifications turned ON in School Day to receive updates.

I hope you enjoy this first day of autumn.

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
