End of Week 4
Published on Mar 2, 2018 18:06

Hi everyone,

This week got off to an exciting start. Due to slight odour of natural gas in the gym we evacuated the building until BFD, board maintenance staff, and the gas company could investigate. Turns out there was a small leak from one of the gas regulators on the roof right near a fresh air intake vent. The line was shut off and repaired immediately. Thanks to our board maintenance staff for their fast and efficient response that kept the disruption to the school day to a minimum.

Teachers are working on Early Communication Letters. These are not formal report cards, and they do not have up-to-date marks. They are simply a quick note to let you know how things are going after the first few weeks, and form the basis for a discussion on parent-teacher night. We expect to send them out next week so you have them before March Break.

Parent-teacher interview night will take place Thursday March 29th from 5-7:30 pm and are by appointment. Once we send home the letters, the registration for interviews will be available through School-Day. Parents can sign up for 5 minute appointments between 5 and 7 pm. Please be respectful of appointment times as all parents want to have the opportunity to see their teen's teacher. If you think you'll need more than 5 minutes, contact the teacher for a private appointment. This puts less time pressure on you and the teacher, and allows for more effective problem solving. And don't forget your loonies and twonies (toonies?) as the Prom Committee will be running a bake sale fundraiser that night.

Planning is underway for our D-Day Anniversary Trip next year. Over 40 students have signaled interest in attending, which is overwhelming! Mr. Strycharz and Ms. Batt met with interested parents this week along with EF Tours to provide an overview of the trip and course. It promises to be an exciting and memorable experience. Keep an eye out for fundraising and sponsorship events over the coming months as our students prepare to represent our school, community and board.

Unfortunately, we did not have the same level of support for our Tanzania Mission Program for next year. While the turnout was high at the parent information night, we did not receive enough student applications to run the program. We will try again next year for the 2019-2020 school year.

With the return of spring comes the return of construction season. We are receiving many phone calls from the construction site between the school property and Holland St. as many students are cutting through to get to the plaza. This is very dangerous as construction crews are working with heavy equipment, including dump trucks, bulldozers and earth movers. Students are not to cross that area, and must instead walk around using Melbourne. Police may lay trespassing charges against students, and this could also lead to school disciplinary response as well. Please assist us by reminding your teen not to be in the construction zone at lunch or after school.

Reminder that the Easter long week-end is March 30-April 2. Students do not attend school on Good Friday or Easter Monday.

OSAP applications are now open! Students who qualify can get up to their entire tuition paid by the province of Ontario -- this year almost 1/3 of all post-secondary students are receiving free tuition. Find out more information and apply at ontario.ca/osap

Prom tickets will go on sale right after the Easter weekend for two weeks. They will be available through School-Day for $70 each. Parents will be required to sign a permission form as well as the Sober Contract. You will also be able to identify any food allergies/sensitivities. Watch your notifications for this special event!

Congratulations to the Members of the Holy Trinity Swim Team representing us at the OFSAA Championships in Windsor this week. Shout outs to the Boys Relay: Diego, Micheal, Stefan, and GianLuca for their excellent performance, as well as individual racers Hayley in breast stroke, Emilia in freestyle, Diego in breast and back and Stefan in free and fly. Haley and Stefan placed in the finals in the top 16 swimmers with Emilia placing 17th! WELL DONE everyone.

And finally, Monday March 5 is our next Parent Council meeting. Please be sure to complete the RSVP if you are planning to attend. It is available here. Thank you to those of you who have already replied -- you don't need to do it again.

Have a wonderful first weekend of March. Let's hope the lamb wins.

God bless
