End of Week 15
Published on Dec 15, 2017 18:08

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all keeping warm! What a turn the weather has taken this week. Students have been staying at school for lunch a lot lately, which is great for our cafeteria. Shannon, our cafeteria manager, provided an outstanding Christmas turkey for lunch on Tuesday, and in keeping with Christmas tradition we are still eating the leftovers!

This week we hosted our future grade 9's in our annual Tiger Winter Games. Over 200 grade 8 students from our 5 feeder elementary schools (and a few from non-feeder schools) experienced a fun day of indoor and outdoor activities, a fantastic lunch prepared by our Hospitality students and the Viveiros brothers, and plenty of opportunities to get to know each other a little. They will soon be submitting their course option sheets for next year! Thanks to the parents, teachers, and principals of our elementary schools for helping to make this day such a huge success. Mr. de Oliveira, the Bridge Builders, and the Athletic Council also deserve kudos for their organization and team building skills.

Congratulations to our Drama department led my Mrs. Danbrook and Mr. Grogan on the successful production of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The students put on an outstanding show, with incredible vocal performances by Kenny P. and Kristina C. as the two lead characters. The ensemble cast performed, sang all the numbers, built the sets, painted the scenery . . . all in 3 months! What a team! We are very proud of the work they did and look forward to next year.

Teachers have completed Final Communication Letters for those students who are continuing to struggle in their classes. They were mailed home today. If you have any concerns, please be sure to contact the teachers directly.

We are heading into the final week before Christmas break, and there are many things going on that are a huge part of our school culture. We will be celebrating mass on Tuesday. Students are expected to attend with their classes, so we ask that you not allow your teen to stay home that morning or sign out. Celebrating our faith together as a community is a tremendous gift that we must not waste.

On Friday students will participate in the annual Christmas Activity Day. Students can choose to attend any one of a number of fun activities. We will have a number of no-cost activities taking place here at the school as well. We hope everyone has a fun and enjoyable day!

After Christmas break students will return to classes on January 8, 2018. Please note the following dates for your calendars:

- January 18/19: grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment. This is for all students in Grade 9 Academic and Applied Math courses. Please avoid scheduling any appointments for your teen those days as the EQAO assessment is part of the students' final grade in Math for the semester.

- January 23: Festival of the Arts at 6pm. This is our twice-yearly showcase of all our arts students work in Visual Arts, Music and Graphic Arts. Set up like a professional gallery in various locations around the school, the students get to display their talents. Don't miss it.

- January 25-31: Semester 1 Final Examinations. Exams are compulsory for all students. Again, please avoid scheduling any appointments during this period. January 31 is our alternate exam day in the event of a cancellation due to inclement weather. Please do not plan for your teen to be away on vacation this day since it could be an exam day in the event of bus cancellations on an earlier day. Students can only be excused from an exam for verifiable emergency reasons (illness, death in family), even if the exam gets pushed back because of weather.

- February 2: Semester 2 begins. Students return to school on Friday February 2, 2018 for the first day of Semester 2.

This will be my final newsletter before Christmas break, so on behalf of all the staff I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May you enjoy all the blessings of the season, and experience the love and fellowship of your family and friends.

God bless,

Brian McKenzie
