Hi everyone,

Thank you to all the parents who came out for Parent Teacher Interview Night this week. It was nice to meet many of you and have a few moments to chat. Midterm reports are coming out in approx. 3 weeks (we'll update you with a more firm date very soon) so please be sure to watch your mail.

A reminder of the Book Launch Celebration taking place next Wednesday, Oct. 25th at Holy Spirit Parish in Barrie. All parents are invited to attend, and you can register here

Some info from the GrandParent System Support Program:

  • Simcoe County is home to approximately 4,000 grand-families. The GrandParent System Support Program (GSSP) was established in response to the increased needs and unique challenges experienced by grandparents with the sole responsibility of raising their grandchildren. The GSSP offers support groups in Barrie, Bradford, Stroud, Orillia and Midland. For more information about services offered by the GSSP, contact Trish Longo at [email protected] or 705-726-9082 ext. 2321.

We were sad to hear of the loss of Gord Downie. Many people know he was the singer and principal songwriter of the Tragically Hip for over 30 years, but he was also an environmentalist and a strong advocate for Indigenous people in Canada. Check out his video "The Secret Path" on the death of Chanie Wenjack, a young boy seeking to escape a residential school in 1967. We remember him for his talent, his passion and, above all, his music.  “Music is the ultimate medium for expressions of love, and those expressions find a beautiful backdrop in the environment. Music is also a popular rallying point — at its central core, it’s a way for people to get in touch with the best parts of themselves and to voice the love in their hearts. And the environment is one of the great loves of our lives — when we think of the best parts of ourselves, the environment is always there, informing us, as a backdrop.” — Gord Downie Congratulations to our Boys' Soccer Teams for winning the CSASC Championships. Next they play for the GBSSA Championships. Our Cross Country Team is also competing at the GBSSA Championships next week. Best of luck!

November 1st is Take Our Kids to Work Day for grade 9 students. This annual event takes place across Canada to provide students the opportunity to see what the world beyond high school is like. Please help your teen get a placement for the day, either in your own workplace or in that of a friend. As well, on November 1st we will be hosting our future grade 9's. The current grade 8's from our elementary feeder schools will be visiting and learning about high school. It promises to be a fun and informative day for them.

Chart

Last year our students took part in the annual COMPASS Survey (COMPASS stands for Cohort study on Obesity, Marijuana Use, Physical Activity, Alcohol Use, Smoking, and Sedentary Behaviour). The summary results of the survey are available here. One area of concern is sedentary behaviour. 50% of our students self-report that they are not getting enough exercise during the day. We are encouraging students to be a little more active since they spend so much of their time sitting in classes. We will be exploring some strategies during the school day, but parents can help as well. If your teen doesn't take a bus, please consider letting him or her walk to and from school rather than getting a ride. Even a 15 minute walk twice a day carries all kinds of health benefits. We continue to be blessed with beautiful weather, but remember that winter is just around the corner. Please be sure to follow us on Twitter (@Trinity_Tigers) for bus updates when the winter weather strikes. Also a reminder that on inclement weather days the school remains open for students even if the buses are cancelled. School closures are rare.

Enjoy the weekend and God bless!
